5 Tips for a Happier New Year as a Registered Nurse

The holiday season can be an extremely stressful time for everyone, especially for nurses. Here are some tips for a happier new year in 2018 when you work anywhere as a registered nurse.

The holiday season can be an extremely stressful time for everyone, especially for nurses. During the week between Christmas and New Years, however, you can take an opportunity to recharge before the start of a brand new year. Here are some tips for a happier new year in 2018 when you work anywhere as a registered nurse.

Meditate While Walking

Meditation can help you relax. Staying calm during your next overnight shift as a registered nurse can help you get through it without feeling burnt out when it’s time to go home. Even if you take ten minutes to meditate, it can help. Now it’s important to remember that this technique is somewhat different than the meditation you might be familiar with; while regular meditation sees you sitting down and focusing on your thought, in walking meditation, you practice mindfulness about the way you walk.

Read

While the work you do can be overwhelming, every so often you will find yourself with some downtime. It might be enough to read the next chapter of the book you’ve recently started. Even if you manage to read a chapter or two, after several weeks, you will have finished reading, and you can move onto the next one.

Take a Walk

Sometimes all you need to do is get some fresh air; while this might not seem like the best idea during the winter, taking a walk once spring returns can be delightful. Don’t overlook the importance of getting enough sleep and exercise.

Learn a Different Language

Learning a different language can be a tremendous help, too. After all, you never know when a new language can come in handy while treating patients who don’t speak English as their first language. Even if you only focus on picking up a few words at a time, you’ll be fluent in next to no time. Every new year represents another chance for self-improvement and continuing your education.

Self-Reflect

Lastly, don’t forget to self-reflect. When you work as a registered nurse, it can be all too easy to criticize yourself. But you shouldn’t be afraid to give yourself an honest assessment and a pat on the back when you deserve one.
