5 Tips for Writing a Better Resume

5 Tips for Writing a Better Resume

Part of your next job search is going to involve updating your resume.

Part of your next job search is going to involve updating your resume. If you don’t already have a resume drafted, then there is no better time to get started on one. After all, if you are a college student in your last semester at school, you’ll need to prepare for your future career as much as possible. That way, you can make the most of your hard-earned degree once graduation has come and gone.

Keep It Brief

There’s an old saying you might know  that goes “brevity is the soul of wit.” Well, in the case of a resume, the shorter it is, the better. Hiring managers are going to be busy, so you’ll want to stand out above all the other candidates for the job you want.

Most hiring managers will only spare a brief glance at your resume. So, in that window, you need to hook them. Clutter won’t help, because it will just be distracting and hard to look at – decluttering will help. Make it as concise and clear-cut as possible.

Make It Fit the Job

Your day job is the target that you’re after; whether you’ve wanted to be a professional baseball player since you were nine, or you wanted to be the first astronaut on Mars, neither of those ambitions will matter if you are looking for a steady career working in an office. List your qualifications, experiences, and the skills you have mastered.

Add in Keywords

You might not think so, but keywords do matter. After all, they’ve got to be called “keywords” for a reason. Keywords have to do with particular phrases or single words that are intertwined with the requirements of the position. Keep the original job description close at hand – whether you want to teach English as a second language, become a full-time nurse, or just want to help make your resume match the job description as closely as possible.

Tout Your Accomplishments

Everyone knows that careers come with milestones, responsibilities, and achievements. Whatever you did at your old job, that will help shape your future – and be sure to highlight any awards or impressive results that you can.
