Medical assisting is one the most popular, fastest growing careers in modern medicine. A medical assistant can be found working in clinics, private practices, hospitals, nursing homes, and many other healthcare facilities across the country.

With increased regulations and guidelines of the industry, medical assistants are now more in demand than ever. The demand is expected to continue to grow so if you’ve ever considered taking the next step in becoming a certified medical assistant, the time to act is now.

How Do I Start?

There are several options available for becoming a certified medical assistant. These include unofficial training, on-campus training, online training, and hybrid programs. More than often, employers select applicants that have received training and certification through a properly accredited program.

If you choose to take formal training through an accredited program, there are many colleges, universities, and technical schools that offer medical assistant programs. Depending on your preferences, and the school, you can choose to earn your certificate in as little as 9-12 months or an associate’s degree in 18-24 months.

Depending on your location or preference, you can receive your certification on-campus, online, or a hybrid of both.

Becoming Certified

In order to be eligible for a CMA exam, you must complete a medical assistant training program through an accredited school. The exam is given in January, June, and October of each year and the cost is between $95 and $145 depending on the exam.

Your Resume/ Your New Job

Once you’ve completed your training and received your certification you can begin the application process! You should take the time to create your resume, as it needs to be professional and neat.

Keep your cover letter concise while still proving ample information on your skills and qualifications. Be sure to use terminology specific to the health care industry in order to convey your knowledge of the field.

Take your time to do your research on your prospective employers in order to cater your cover letter to them. It takes time and effort, but it’s worth it!
